10 December 2007

It was a few degrees warmer today so the ice has slowly been melting all day and has left a muddy slushy mess. The first picture is some icicles that built up on some plants at the side of our house. The horses have been in again all day because it is just too unpleasant for them to be outside.

The second picture is of Gee on her second outing, we had a bit of sun the day after her first outing and I particularly like this one because she is being all frisky, rearing, jumping and shaking her head. She does this little squealy grunt before she lets off steam almost like a squeak and then she bursts into motion. Unfortunately I havent been able to get her out again because the mud is knee deep. She did have fun though and has calmed down a bit in her stall, she was really getting restless.
With all the flooding in Washington State and surrounds over the past week there are so many people who have lost their homes but we all tend to forget the animals. Many animals have lost their lives in these floods and storms and continue to be stranded and standing up to their bellies in water. The rescue efforts are enormous for both people and animals and when you think that because of all the displaced people, they wont be able to take their animals back because they have to find somewhere for themselves first. On one of the other blogs that I read the poster had a video of some horses standing in water and Abraham Lincoln said that he didnt want to watch it because it would upset him too much. He also questioned whether his deep compassion, love and concern for animals, even the small ones like birds and squirrels, in recent years was odd and uncommon and I have to say, definitely not, I cry over a dead bird, an injured animal and have such a deep love for my horses. Unfortunately there are many people who still look at animals as dumb and unfeeling and who can be abused in any way they like, but this could not be further from the truth. More and more people are being educated and hopefully we are winning the battle, if I can even change one person's view on a horse and how they are thinking, loving, feeling, compassionate creatures I will be happy. They may not function in exactly the same way as we humans do, but they do function. So in answer to Abraham's question, no you are not strange, you are a true human being and I am so glad that you have found such a great passion in your photography and surrounding haven.

I posted some more info on this flooding problem in yesterday's post with contact details for anyone who would like to support this effort in any way, every little bit helps.

That's it for today folks, I hope everyone had a good Monday. (((Hugs)))

8 November 2007

This will be a short one today, the day got away from me again and before I knew it darkness was falling and I still hadnt fed the horses and finished chores.

The picture today is of the 4 yearling fillies the other day when they saw the dog down the other end of the field. Lousy background but I liked their nice alert look LOL.

Beckz, thanks for your visit, I am still struggling with the issue of the horse abuse etc. but I am not as obsessed as I was a week or so ago, very troubling. But you are right I have to do my best to protect the ones I do have and not compromise their future, any more than that I cannot do other than to try to educate people on the subject.

Mike I know what you mean, I may have told you this but as a child my parents bought my bother and I a Brownie camera each and we used to go to the train station in our town which had a bridge across the rails to the other platforms. Those were the days of steam engines and we used to go and visit there and try to get pictures of the trains and their steam. I dont remember if we ever got anything significant or what happened to those photos LOL. My father worked as a fitter and turner and brass finisher on the railways most of his life so trains were very much a part of our life too. Our holidays were always by train (the place we always visited was a 2 and a half day trip by train). It was so exciting and we used to hang out of the windows looking at all sorts of stuff and just watch the world go by, only problem is that on a few occasions we got a small piece of coal in our eyes from the steam engine and once it had to be removed at a hospital.
Brings back so many memories.

Hope you all had a great day, ours was not too bad temp wise and we are expecting a slight warm up for the weekend still (Indian Summer) which will be nice. ((((Hugs)))) to you all.

26 September 2007

I missed yesterday, am having a few hiccups in the pathway of life, hopefully will be back to my usual schedule soon. The picture today is of one of the foals (a yearling in the pic) that was born 3 weeks before I came over to USA. Her name is Christine and she was sold to people down the road from us and I see her every time I go to feed the mares. I suspect she may be in foal because she is looking like she has a bit of a belly on her!! She was born the same year as my filly Lori.

We had just under a quarter inch of rain over the past 24 hours which isnt much but we will take anything we can get. It is also starting to cool down a bit again which is a blessing but that normally means that wham bam and it is winter all of a sudden with nothing in between LOL.

I kept the horses in since last night to give the field a chance to dry a bit and also have a rest from their hooves, but I am going to have to put them out again tomorrow. I am going to leave them out as long as possible or else I am going to have a ton of stables to keep clean.

I visited a site today via another blog that I frequent as a lurker which left me even more disturbed about the abuse of horses sent to the slaughter houses than ever. It was very graphic and made me more determined to hold onto my horses for as long as I have to until I can find good homes for them. It was heartbreaking to see the photos.

So all in all I am not a very happy camper at the moment and having serious doubts about the compassion of a vast number of the human race. I wish I had space for all of those poor abused horses.

(((((Hugs)))) to you all.
